As you can see from the velocity of my posts I seem to have a bit of a motivational problem when it comes to health and fitness. The important thing however is that it is still on my mind and I will not become discouraged simply because I have net to succeed. Notice I didn’t use the word fail!
Just as I conquered smoking (been over 3-years now) I will also get a grip on my health. When the time is right and everything in the universe aligns for me, it will happen and it can happen for you to. When the returns for improving ones health are high enough, the motivation will come. Until then, keep it in mind and keep re-evaluating the value of living healthy before you no longer have a life to improve. (How’s that for a kick in the pants?)

My 3-Mile PodcampBoston 4 ( #PB4 ) Loop
(Link to Original Google Map)
Sometimes we find ourselves in situation where we just know that we’re not going to be doing the healthiest of things. One of these times is coming up for me as I find myself planning for Podcamp Boston 4. Other then the usual geeky fair, I know that there will be three important staples that will play a significant roll in my Podcamp experience.
- Beer
- Pizza
- Donuts
Those of you with a personal trainer will quickly be advised to simply eliminate these three vices. Those of us worship John Belushi and have warn out multiple copies of Animal House will beg to differ.. besides did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! So when you disagree with logic, think like an accountant and tilt the numbers in your direction.
The fine representatives from the State Highway Patrol have actually made it easy on us to get started by so dutifully enforcing DUI laws. So step one is simple, find a place to park and leave your keys behind. The obvious choice is a hotel/motel somewhere between the three essentials and the venue. Once your location is secured, use Google Maps to plot your paths. Normally I’d endorse going green and only making digital copies of your route but since you’ll (well me, I) will be in an unfamiliar city I’m going to want a hard-copy backup that isn’t dependent on battery power should I get lost.
I managed to plot myself a real nice 3-mile course which should amount to about an hour of aerobic activity (not to mention the walking during the event). This will nicely de-emphasize the effects of the Beer, Pizza and Donuts.
Of course those with the personal trainers will again argue that this in no way counteracts the effects of the Beer, Pizza and Donuts. But the idea here isn’t to go though life agonizing over your every move and becoming obsessively compulsive about your diet. Once in a while you need to cut loose and release some stress which arguably is very important to your overall health. That’s really the whole idea behind this post.
P.S. Feel free to tweet @me if you want to join our little beer and donut crawl! I’m always live on Google Latitude.

Exercise means much more than suffering in a gym for 2 hours every day. It simply means getting moving! There are hundreds of ways you can start an exercise program today, and literally thousands of reasons as to why you should start. This articles discusses 20 great reasons why you should start. Let’s get started:
1. You were flexible and limber at 6 months old, 3 years old, and 7 years old. So should you be flexible and limber well into your 60’s and 70’s. Your children deserve grandparents that can play with them; not sit grounded on the sidelines with an “injury” caused from making excuses for not exercising their whole lives.
2. All the sexy people are doing it. And- you would like to be sexier, right?
3. It strengthens your heart. Your resting heart rate will decrease when you exercise. Thus, a stronger and more efficient ticker that is geared up to last longer.
4. Love handles disappear. Burn calories while consuming less fat and overall calories and you will be buying smaller pants sooner than you can imagine!
5. Bathing suit season. This should always be on your mind. Don’t start exercising the week before, as you won’t get the results you want. Instead, start thinking “bathing suit season is around the corner” in December.
6. Sexier, slimmer you. Say those words a few times. If that isn’t motivation to start exercising, nothing is!
7. Reason to go shopping. Getting new suits, shirts, skirts, dresses, jeans… these are all fun, let’s admit it. They are even more fun to shop for when we HAVE to get them because all our other clothes are too big- due to our new exercise program.

On the 25th of May, this site will be exactly one year old. I was hoping by this time to be able to share some amazing results with you. That’s not going to happen. Actually I’ve gained weight since then. yea.
The rules for weight loss are very simple. Move more, eat less. It’s also easy to quit smoking. Just stop. Okay see my point? I once heard in an interview (really wish I could give proper credit but can’t recall who it was) that quitting cigarettes is far easier then dieting. With smoking you have the opportunity to make it difficult to obtain. With dieting, you still need to eat. Imagine if you HAD to have 3 cigarettes a day to survive and never more?
So where did I go wrong? Lack of effort and lack of will power. The one saving grace is that after a year of failing I’m still here ready to keep after my goals. I know that everything I do now at age 44 is going to by me more quality time in the end. What better motivation is there? I’ll keep you posted and thanks for letting me dump on you a bit.
Healthy habits start early. The sooner you get your kids outside to enjoy what nature has to offer the easier it will be to desuade them from being video / computer game addicted couch potatoes.
Every state offers free or low cost state parks each offering many unique opportunities for fitness. Be it tossing the ball around, hiking the trails, climing the hills or fishing the streams.
If you really need that technology angle to lure your kids out take a gander at Geocaching. A global treasure hunt that can easilily be played at any desired fitness level.
The important thing is to get out and move. Making exercise a habit is a lifelong gift you can give your child that ranks right up there with a good education.
No Child Left Inside is an initiative of Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell, coordinated by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to encourage Connecticut families and visitors alike to enjoy all the recreational resources and outdoor activities available in Connecticut’s state parks, forests and waterways.
The world most certianly is my treadmill.. that is if it hasn’t been converted to a skating rink by old man winter! But that’s okay because their is a really good chance that your home will probably make for a pretty good stair climber machine!
Just start off by doing as many flights as you feel comfortable with. Make a chart and log your progress. Each week try to do just one more flight and you’ll be amazed at how many you can eventually do.
Don’t be discouraged if you can only do a few, that’s still more than if you hadn’t tried. Remember calories will burn off much more quickly on the steps then when you are walking so that’s an added bonus.
Just because your inside doesn’t mean you should be in your bathrobe and slippers. Wear comfortable exercise clothes and proper footwear!

Maybe? Gee.. that’s not very positive! One of the important rules in life we must all learn is that sometimes we are not in 100% control. Oh sure we always do have some form of control and can nudge our lives in one direction or another but other times our pre-existing karma is just too powerful for us to fully overcome. This is often the case with illness as I have recently found out.
You’ve all read already that my move (which is now complete) has totally turned my exercise routine upside down. At some point during the moving process I began coming down with the typical winter upper respiratory infection. The smart thing would have been to slow down, get some help and recover while things were still manageable. Well.. I was having so much fun playing “Let’s see if I can move all by myself” that I pushed my limits a little to far and ended up with a full blown case of bronchitis.
After three weeks of antibiotics and acting like a sloth I’ve finally had enough. I woke up sensing a little extra energy and though I’d take advantage of it by getting outside and enjoying a bit of the brisk air. My original intentions were to just walk to the corner and back to not push my limits again. Afterall, several flights of stairs and I’m still winded from the lack of lung capacity.
This was my first venture into my new neighborhood. I was pleased to find the terrain relatively flat and after getting to the corner I was thinking that this really isn’t bad at all. Well next thing I knew it was around the block for me.
Above is my path plotted with Google Earth. Only 2.23 miles and an embarrassing 1-hour to complete but considering how the past month has been for me, I’m really not all that disappointed.
Bottom line. Don’t get caught up in self pity during an illness. Honestly listen to your body and make the call to get back into the swing of things.
