Exercise means much more than suffering in a gym for 2 hours every day. It simply means getting moving!  There are hundreds of ways you can start an exercise program today, and literally thousands of reasons as to why you should start.  This articles discusses 20 great reasons why you should start. Let’s get started:

1.  You were flexible and limber at 6 months old, 3 years old, and 7 years old. So should you be flexible and limber well into your 60’s and 70’s. Your children deserve grandparents that can play with them; not sit grounded on the sidelines with an “injury” caused from making excuses for not exercising their whole lives.

2.   All the sexy people are doing it. And- you would like to be sexier, right?

3.   It strengthens your heart. Your resting heart rate will decrease when you exercise. Thus, a stronger and more efficient ticker that is geared up to last longer.

4.   Love handles disappear.  Burn calories while consuming less fat and overall calories and you will be buying smaller pants sooner than you can imagine!

5.   Bathing suit season.  This should always be on your mind. Don’t start exercising the week before, as you won’t get the results you want. Instead, start thinking “bathing suit season is around the corner” in December.

6.   Sexier, slimmer you.  Say those words a few times. If that isn’t motivation to start exercising, nothing is!

7.   Reason to go shopping. Getting new suits, shirts, skirts, dresses, jeans… these are all fun, let’s admit it. They are even more fun to shop for when we HAVE to get them because all our other clothes are too big- due to our new exercise program.

On the 25th of May, this site will be exactly one year old.  I was hoping by this time to be able to share some amazing results with you.  That’s not going to happen.  Actually I’ve gained weight since then.  yea.

The rules for weight loss are very simple.  Move more, eat less.  It’s also easy to quit smoking.  Just stop.  Okay see my point?  I once heard in an interview (really wish I could give proper credit but can’t recall who it was) that quitting cigarettes is far easier then dieting.  With smoking you have the opportunity to make it difficult to obtain.  With dieting, you still need to eat.  Imagine if you HAD to have 3 cigarettes a day to survive and never more?

So where did I go wrong?  Lack of effort and lack of will power.  The one saving grace is that after a year of failing I’m still here ready to keep after my goals.  I know that everything I do now at age 44 is going to by me more quality time in the end.  What better motivation is there?  I’ll keep you posted and thanks for letting me dump on you a bit.

No Child Left Inside

Healthy habits start early.  The sooner you get your kids outside to enjoy what nature has to offer the easier it will be to desuade them from being video / computer game addicted couch potatoes.

Every state offers free or low cost state parks each offering many unique opportunities for fitness.  Be it tossing the ball around, hiking the trails, climing the hills or fishing the streams.

If you really need that technology angle to lure your kids out take a gander at Geocaching.  A global treasure hunt that can easilily be played at any desired fitness level.

The important thing is to get out and move.  Making exercise a habit is a lifelong gift you can give your child that ranks right up there with a good education.

No Child Left Inside is an initiative of Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell, coordinated by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to encourage Connecticut families and visitors alike to enjoy all the recreational resources and outdoor activities available in Connecticut’s state parks, forests and waterways.

Just start off by doing as many flights as you feel comfortable with. Make a chart and log your progress. Each week try to do just one more flight and you’ll be amazed at how many you can eventually do.

Don’t be discouraged if you can only do a few, that’s still more than if you hadn’t tried. Remember calories will burn off much more quickly on the steps then when you are walking so that’s an added bonus.

Just because your inside doesn’t mean you should be in your bathrobe and slippers. Wear comfortable exercise clothes and proper footwear!

2.23 Mile Course

Maybe?  Gee.. that’s not very positive!  One of the important rules in life we must all learn is that sometimes we are not in 100% control.  Oh sure we always do have some form of control and can nudge our lives in one direction or another but other times our pre-existing karma is just too powerful for us to fully overcome.  This is often the case with illness as I have recently found out.

You’ve all read already that my move (which is now complete) has totally turned my exercise routine upside down.  At some point during the moving process I began coming down with the typical winter upper respiratory infection.  The smart thing would have been to slow down, get some help and recover while things were still manageable.  Well.. I was having so much fun playing “Let’s see if I can move all by myself” that I pushed my limits a little to far and ended up with a full blown case of bronchitis.

After three weeks of antibiotics and acting like a sloth I’ve finally had enough.  I woke up sensing a little extra energy and though I’d take advantage of it by getting outside and enjoying a bit of the brisk air.  My original intentions were to just walk to the corner and back to not push my limits again.  Afterall, several flights of stairs and I’m still winded from the lack of lung capacity.

This was my first venture into my new neighborhood.  I was pleased to find the terrain relatively flat and after getting to the corner I was thinking that this really isn’t bad at all.  Well next thing I knew it was around the block for me.

Above is my path plotted with Google Earth.  Only 2.23 miles and an embarrassing 1-hour to complete but considering how the past month has been for me, I’m really not all that disappointed.

Bottom line.  Don’t get caught up in self pity during an illness.  Honestly listen to your body and make the call to get back into the swing of things.

No not the kind you jump over literally, at least not on this blog! I’m talking about those little curve balls life throws at you both good and bad that have a tendancy to break your normal exercise rutine.

A series of events has recently lead to me towards the purchase of a home and break free from apartment life and normally one would think going from an apartment into a home should be an easy task and yes, normally it is. However, when you’ve lived in the same apartment for more than 10-years you can find yourself with quite the accumulation of (mostly worthless) stuff.

With the Fall season here and daylight quickly becoming a premium, I have to spend as much of it cleaning and packing as I can so walking and hiking will be out of the question for a little while, but that’s okay because not only is life your treadmill, but it’s also your freeweight set! Crank the tunes, move quickly and do a few curls on your way to the dumpster with that heavy bag of trash. THink about extra movements you can make as you work to gain that extra sweat equity in yourself.

Even if your not forced to break from your normal rutine think about ways to increase movement and resistance in your every day tasks and continue to find new ways to make the world your treadmill!

Wow. After such a phenomenal June, the past two months are very embarrassing. I suppose I could blame it on the heat, and as long as you don’t live in New England to know that we had a pretty mild summer you’d probably believe it. But the sad reality is I just got lazy. But that’s okay, I see my error and I just have to apply myself more to get back into the swing.

September and October are typically ideal months for outdoor activities. Should be very comfortable and dry.

Well it’s been a while since I’ve done some serious (or not so serious) geocaching. It seems that for me, the sport seems to be more of a Fall / Winter activity. In New England (as in many areas) summer can mean mosquitoes and deer ticks so cooler weather does have its advantage as does the recent trend towards milder winters.

Don’t let the short distance in the above plot fool you, we did plenty of climbing and walking over some not so easy terrain. While in the field I recorded this brief introduction to geocaching on spotjots.

Yea, it’s been a while since I’ve posted to TWIMT. Between PodCamp (which I got plenty of power walking at!) and other projects it’s been a challange.

Our towns road crew have been busy repairing some major pothole damage from last winter, and in the process expanded some of the roads in my neighborhood and equipped them with sidewalks! Now I have many miles of power walk track right from my front door!

Sometimes we all need alittle change of scenery to keep things interesting.
